A Glossary of Terminology in Television Shows !
We at Forum 32 have brought you behind the scene segments from shows like Qubool Hai, Arjun – Har Yug Mein Aayega Ek and Suvreen Guggal – Topper of the Year. While we bring you how a show is made and various sequences from romantic to action, ofcourse, drama is part of it too and emotional scenes which give you a glimpse of how hard the team works to bring you 21 minutes of an episode.
Here are some terminology you have heard and have asked us as to what it means. While we will try and bring you as many as we can, some examples we will try and bring in future as even we have gotten used to the terms and do not pan the camera to the spot where these terms would be fascinating to you all, the viewers.
Shaleen Malhotra as Arjun Suryakant Rawte in Arjun – Har Yug Mein Aayega Ek
So the first one that we have just used, Pan the camera – It basically is movement of camera from left to right or top to bottom.
Mark – the spot on the floor where the artist is to come and stand in the “movement” that is choreographed for the scene/shot.
Order – What the Cameraman/Artists say to the Director when they are ready to take orders from him which .
Qubool Hai – Amer Fort Shoot
There are of course many interesting terminologies like, Mundi kaat (Don’t go thinking that it means cut the head off). Well it does, but not of a person but of the Camera or a baby (light, it is not term of endearment but type of light) from its stand and to put it down.
Gel- (not the one you put in your hair) Gelatine paper of various colors that are used over the light for different effect.
Thermocol – A white sheet of thermocol to give face light. Technically it bounces of the light that falls on it. This is usually in between the couple during a romantic shot where close-ups are taken to portray extreme emotions of love. Imagine, two artists giving a romantic shot and there is guy sitting underneath them, staring upwards as he holds a sheet of thermocol in between them while they are supposedly in a clinch. That is making of a TV show for you.
Gateway – It does not lead to anywhere but it is a way to spread light from a source.
Qubool Hai – Amer Fort Shoot
These are just some of the terms used. Watch the videos we have and we will answer other queries you have about the terms used by the technicians. During a shot, there are details which the Director, Assitant Director, Cameraman, Chief Cameraman, light man, Creative who watch the monitor and determine if the shot is done well. The team effort is to create a shot that is seamless with perfect lighting, continuity and delivery with movement of the camera, artists as per the lighting done. It takes lot of energy for a person to take care of ten different things while a shot is taken. The artists has to remember the movement, the position of the camera, the light, dialogues and what the Director says in between shots be it what emotions he wants out of them or the way he wants to do a movement.
Heli Daruwala as Alisha Dewan in Suvreen Guggal – Topper of the Year
Making a TV show is tough and while they entertain the viewers which is their job, it is a job that is tough, stressful and draining. A team of over 100 people on daily basis work to bring you an episode. Besides the team on the floor, there are editors, background music composers who give you the necessary effect to create an episode. Overall it takes three days to create one episode of 21 minutes after the story, screenplay and dialogues have been written and approved. From the time the screenplay comes to the floor to the final product that goes to the Channel for approval first and then telecast after review/reshoot or addition and subtraction.
